Age Appropriate Gross Motor Development
Twists Around While In Sitting

I am learning to twist around in the sitting position! When I am in the sitting position, place yourself behind me and call out for me or attract me with a toy. Observe if I am able to twist around without falling over! I usually develop this ability between 9 and 11 months.

Steps
  • Get your child into the sitting position.
  • Sit behind your child and encourage him to twist around to look at you.
  • Observe if he can twist himself around in sitting without falling over!
  • Observe if he can twist around in both directions.

Feedback

Your child is probably able to control his trunk and balance fully in the sitting position now! Once this is done, his will learn to master the control of his leg muscles to allow himself to stand and walk! You may look at suggested activities for more ideas with this task.

  1. Encourage your child to refine his sitting balance by playing peek-a-boo with him in this manner.

  2. Encourage your child to sit on a low stool (make sure his feet are flat on the ground with his hips and knees bent at 90 degrees; you may use a telephone book) and maintain his balance. Sitting on a stool gives the child a smaller base of support, hence encouraging development of balance strategies.

  3. If your child is able to sit independently on a low stool, challenge his balance by encouraging him to reach out to the sides (both left and right), as well as upwards and downwards. Use his favorite toys to encourage him to reach out. This will help him develop more balance strategies.

  4. Sit behind your child and help him maintain his sitting balance by providing him with some support at his hips (close to his bottom) as he twists around. As his sitting balance improves, gradually decrease your assistance.

Uses Index Finger To Poke

I am learning to poke with my index finger! Roll some soft play dough into a small ball and demonstrate to me how to poke a hole in it with your index finger. Observe if I am able to do the same. Try this on my other hand as well.

Steps
  • Roll some soft play dough into marble-sized balls.
  • Demonstrate to your child how to poke a hole in it with your index finger.
  • Observe if he is able to do the same.
  • Try this on his other hand as well.

Feedback

Your child is developing isolation of his index finger muscles in this activity. A child usually develops the ability to poke with his index fingers between 9 and 12 months. Look at the suggested activities for more ideas.

  1. Encourage your child to use his index finger to press buttons on toys or keyboards etc.

  2. Ensure that you are providing opportunities for him to poke using the index finger on both of his hands.

  3. Put different textured materials at the bottom of an egg carton and get your child to use his index finger to feel and poke at them.

  4. Let your child play with toys that have buttons or dials, and get him to use his index fingers.

  5. Put some finger paint on your child's index finger and let him “paint” with it.
